Transforming & treasuring in-between spaces: increasing citizens access to green areas, building more resilient, safe and sociable neighbourhoods
Barcelona City Council, alongside BIMSA, wants to increase and enhance the value of nearby public spaces, expanding green spaces and adapting them to the changing climate.
The Trinitat Nova project involves the improvement of pedestrian spaces and the connection within the neighbourhood of Nou Barris, the creation of a large green space, the promotion of diversity of uses and economic activities in its surroundings, the revitalisation of the social and urban space and the promotion of a new development model based on sustainability.
The neighbourhood
The Trinitat Nova neighbourhood is located near the northern entrance of the city, above the major avenue crossing the north of the city- Avinguda Meridiana. In the 50’s, during the dictatorship, the city built public housing abutting the main avenue. They were very cheap flats with precarious living conditions, and in the 90’s they were diagnosed with aluminosis. In 1997 the Urban Plan was approved, developed in collaboration with the European Union to remodel the neighbourhood. In different phases, new residential buildings have been built, giving new homes to the residents of the neighbourhood. At the same time that the neighbourhood has been remodelled, with new green areas being created.
The Challenges
Barcelona has identified rising temperatures, reduced availability of water, increased flooding and shrinking beaches as the biggest climate challenges they are facing. For the inland neighbourhood of Trinitat Nova, the first three will be especially crucial to address in the project implemented.
Proposed transformation
The interventions under the scope of Proximity and interior space plan increase the surface of public space for pedestrians, improving environmental, social, landscape and thermal conditions. The demonstration site of Trinitat Nova will focus on the interventions foreseen between Palamós Street, S’Agaró and La Llosa Streets.
The transformation will enable comfortable pedestrian access through new pavements, and resting areas. It will create more resilient spaces prioritising permeable and fertile ground to support green growth and surfaces and better water management. It will focus on creating safe and social spaces with strategic lighting, more urban furniture and areas for play.
Expected results
The goal is to achieve more than 25% of green space coverage. With a surface of 8.640 m2, this equates to 2.493 m2 of green area.
