2nd District of Bucharest Municipality: A co-creating journey to reimagine a maze of green spaces for a safe, social and active city

Bucharest District 2 as part of a broader project is embarking on a journey of transformation of its green spaces. The “Green Maze Fundeni” project aims to regenerate and enhance public spaces in the Fundeni area of Bucharest, will undergo comprehensive transformation, developing learning on how to work with an area beset with several social challenges.

A model of co-creation of the new green spaces will be crucial to setting a pathway for regenerative and sustainable design of these spaces, which inspires local actors to reimagine their neighbourhoods. To do this, the city team will include Nhood Romania, UrbanizeHUB, Climatosfera, and the Technical University of Construction Bucharest (UTCB).

The neighbourhood

The Fundeni neighbourhood in northeastern Bucharest, Romania, grapples with high population density and limited green areas.  Moreover, issues like substandard housing conditions and social marginalisation further compound the neighbourhood’s complexities.

The challenges

  • Informality & Safety & Perceptions
  • Discontinuity of green spaces
  • Car centric
  • Vulnerable population

The area’s social challenges stem from a lack of stable income of the residents in the area, resulting in high levels of crime (robbery, prostitution and high-risk drug trafficking) and associated on street conflicts.  Due to informal activities such as pop-up Kiosks and illegal parking, public spaces are disconnected from each other. Residents face challenges like air pollution and inadequate recreational facilities.

Proposed transformation

The “Green Maze Fundeni” project aims to address these challenges through comprehensive revitalization efforts. ReGreeneration in Bucharest targets 23 apartment building, focusing on reclaiming and reimagining the space between buildings which as community spaces, fostering a sense of ownership among residents.

Expected results

Upon completion, the “Green Maze Fundeni” project anticipates several positive outcomes. These include the creation of new green spaces, improved air quality, and enhanced recreational facilities. The other key transformation will be a shift in the perception of the area, promoting a sense of pride, ownership and care for these community spaces, specifically using community gardens. By addressing key challenges and promoting sustainable development, the project seeks to create a healthier, more livable neighborhood for all.
